On December 21, 2021, President Biden signed into law, the Responsible Education Mitigating Options and Technical Extensions Act ("REMOTE Act"). The REMOTE Act provides further relief for veteran students by extending the expiration date for certain provisions relating to benefits provided under U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' educational assistance programs during COVID–19 pandemic, and for other purposes.
Most notably, the REMOTE Act extends the expiration date from December 21, 2021 to June 1, 2022 for the following:
Students attending a course(s) converted to online or distance learning due to COVID-19 and received a monthly housing allowance (MHA) based on the resident (in-person) rate, may continue to receive their training online and receive their MHA based on the resident (in-person) rate until June 1, 2022.
Extension of all COVID-19 protections covered in the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 ("Isakson and Roe").
According VA, updates to VA systems are currently underway to update the expiration date just signed into law. Students who may have received a letter from VA with the previous expiration date of December 21, 2021, should disregarded the letter.
